Health and Safety is Dangerous!

A Business Times Editorial by Sharon Coleman M.I.I.T.T.

Nobody wants to be at risk. If there is a chance of falling masonry, most would choose to wear a hard hat. But even for those who wish to comply, Health and Safety legislation can rattle the most stable of nervous systems. The employer is always in a danger area because, irrespective of the size of the business, the employer has a legal duty to protect staff (and anyone else on the premises) as far as is reasonably practicable. From the moment new staff step into the workplace they must receive sufficient and suitable health and safety training to protect themselves and others. And it’s not as if health and safety can be trained once and then forgotten, the responsibility is on-going and so the need for refresher training is ever present.

E-learning specialists, Essential Training Solutions (ETS), in association with Llewellyn (Safety Advisors) Europe, have released an online course to enable busy employers to deliver a generic corporate induction to the staff who need it, when they need it. Starting Work Safely covers Health and Safety and Fire and Evacuation, and has been approved by IOSH, the world’s biggest body for health and safety professionals. Starting Work Safely enables employers to deliver a validated, consistent message, on demand. It is assessment-based, so it evidences competence not just attendance – a much safer and effective alternative to a typical “tick-box” approach to induction.

Orchard Print Services in Daventry have already put the whole team through Starting Work Safely. Janet Head, Director, says,

“We were looking for a structured assessment-based induction for new staff and needed to ensure that the knowledge of our current staff was up to date. Starting Work Safely allowed us to deliver validated training without disrupting the running of the business. The staff found the course easy to use and really enjoyed the interactive tutorials. The opportunity to self-test at every stage built confidence and reinforced knowledge whilst preparing them for their summative assessments. I have evidence that all staff have passed an approved training course, every member of staff has been awarded a certificate from IOSH, and the whole experience has been very successful.”

Starting Work Safely was designed by a highly experienced Training Consultant who has advised at a senior level in many industry sectors, and who has been involved in the progression of e-learning for over 25 years. Starting Work Safely is designed to train. It aids learning and retention by using appropriate e-learning tools combined with proven training methodology. ETS are an approved VTCT Centre, running and assessing online diplomas on the Government’s Qualifications and Credit Framework. This experience, together with top level customer support, ensures every client is in safe hands.

As well as providing this training solution direct to companies, ETS are also offering independent Safety Advisors the opportunity to add this course to their portfolios so they too can benefit from the advantages of quality e-learning.
